My great dilemma with...

I so wish I could wear red lipstick and not feel slightly out of my comfort zone. Every time I see someone struttin' along, sporting ruby red lips I think "gosh I wish I could pull that off" but every time I try, its a-no-bueno-no-go-not-good-just-stop-now-disaster.

exhibit a: In highschool, I tried wearing red lipstick to a dance. Lets just say in all of my pictures, I had RED TEETH. Why didn't anyone tell me I don't know?!?!? Red lipstick is the hardest to keep off of your pearly whites! A little tip: When someone has lipstick on their teeth, please do them a favor and TELL them for cryin' out loud! Looking at the photos now, its about the funniest thing ever...but ten years ago, mmmm not so much :-).

exhibit b:  Another highschool story...one day me and some girlfriends where at the mall checkin' out the cosmetic counter. We all decided to try on RED lipstick. I of course chose this fire engine, shouldn't even be a lipstick color, shade of red. We all had our laughs, and then I went to take it off and it literally would NOT come off. I  could have shaved my lips OFF and you still would have seen the remains of it. I wiped away as much as I could, feeling completely like a clown (literally) and of course ran into my huge crush on the way out! What are the odds?! Then he said "what did you eat that was red?!" I wanted to die. DIE I tell you! haha. Oh gosh. Red lipstick is just out to get me, I swear.

So this is my question to you all...do you wear red lipstick? If so what is your favorite shade? And if you don't wear it...why not?

  1. I wear red lipstick quite a bit actually...and because of that, I think I've gotten in the habit of wiping my teeth with my tongue often so I DON'T have the red teeth dilema. And make sure to blot after you put your red lips on! It helps a lot.

  2. I wear it occasionnally and I like Boots No 7 in Cherry (from Target). Stila lip glaze in Cranberry or Burts Bees tinted chapstick in Red Dahlia are two I wear that make me feel a little less out there.

  3. It helps if you don't apply the lipstick directly to your lips, but dab it on lightly with your finger. That way, you can easily control the intensity and stop application before the color takes over your face. I wear Revlon Fire and Ice, which is a shade I've heard looks good on everyone. I also do that grandma trick with a tissue after applying and then thinly coat with my favorite chap stick.

  4. Sephora cream lip stain, the matte red one. It is a bold tone, but it seems universally flattering, it won't rub off on your teeth, stays put for hours, remove with a makeup remover wipe and then wash with soap and water. It actually conditions lips too.

  5. You could definitely pull off red lipstick! I use a Revlon lip stain (Just Bitten in Flame) and it's fantastic. You can make it as subtle or as bold as you want. Plus you can be more precise with it than lipstick. (Bonus: I can kiss my husband with it on and he doesn't have to wear my lipstick on his face). I also have a Revlon orange-red lipstick - awesome colour. I think it's called Coral. But with that, I dab it on with my fingers so it's not a mess. Give the lip stain a try!

  10. I can't do red red either, but I do wear shades of pink and I love it! I love your stories, and can definitely relate! The lipstick teeth are the worst!

  11. LOVE red! I usually use a red stain, just bitten by revlon is a great one, that way it doesn't get on teeth or smudge off on my coffee cup or glass!

  12. Wish I could wear red lipstick! I think it is beautiful, but everytime I try it on it just looks out of place! It may be just be seeing something that looks comlete different from my pale pinkies. I think I should just buck up, be bold and do it! You too! Great post!

  13. I have never tried red...I always love the pictures of actresses who wear it but I just have a feeling it wouldn't look right on me. I'm more of a lip gloss/chap stick kinda girl =P

  14. okay! so i totally felt just like you until i got my hands on a revlon's colorburst candy apple lipstick! it was rec in Instyle mag for those that were nervous about taking the red lipstick plunge (like us!) and it's def my newest fave! seriously, you have to try it!

and this is super recent for me, so i totally understand where you are coming from, girl!

  15. I want to try it so bad, but I'm nervous! It's a bold statement.I was contemplating going today to see what I could find.

  16. I adore red (and more so orange) lipstick. It makes me feel so feminine and confident in a way that only lipstick can. If you feel like it's too over powering try buying a red lip pencil (which is very dry) and lightly outline your lips. Then use a matching lip color (I use Revlon "red" pencil and "certainly red" lipstick) and don't rub it on like you normally would, just lightly blot your lips with it to fill in the color. Its a lot less over powering and you don't have the fear of it smearing or looking uneven :)

  17. I have a hard time wearing red lipstick too. It just doesn't seem to be my color. I read somewhere that if your skin has more warm tones then you should wear more berry lipsticks. Don't know if it's true, but it works for me :) My favorite I ever found was Cover Girl Outlast Lipstain #420 Sassy Mauve. What is your favorite lip color?

  18. I wear red lipstick almost everyday! Two things - a good liner, and CONFIDENCE! If you can sell it, you look good in it! Act as though you think it is fabulous and everyone else will believe it too. Colors I love... Nars heatwave (and use the pencil to fill in your whole lip - this way it is matte and even and wont rub off on teeth!), Mac Ruby Woo and Chanel doesn't make a bad red. Secondly, if you are light skinned go for a orange red, darker skinned (more olive etc) go for a blue red. Thirdly, I bursh my lips with my toothbrush after my teeth with water to exfoliate and then I always use chapstick or lipstick primer (Mac's is great) before applying the lipstick so it is smooth and even! And PS I LOVE your blog!

  19. LOL this literally cracked me up! Red is tough, but it is just about finding the right shade for you. And then deciding between a matte and a glossy red...once you find that shade though, I promise you won't regret your purchase!

  20. Red lipstick is the first thing that comes to mind when someone says "Either you can pull it off or you can't." Anne Hathaway pulls it off beautifully though!

  22. Thanks for the comment on my Mocha Swirl cookies! I love that your blog is called the Color Issue, because I LOVE color. Beautiful colors make everything more wonderful! As for red lipstic.... love it but can't pull it off!!!

  23. I tend to go for more of a bordeaux color than bright red, but dark lipstick definitely works well for brunettes with fair skin! I've heard putting a teensy bit of vaseline on your front teeth helps with the red teeth issue!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I use Stila Longwear lipcolor. It doesn't run, you don't need to wear liner with it, and it comes off easily with makeup remover wipes.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Frankly, I have the same issue as you with the red lipstick. I tend to veer more towards blushes and pinks. It looks really good on some people though.

  26. Ha! I'll wear red lipstick on occasion, and its very rare. I feel like in every day life, I don't pull it off that well, but when I'm wearing all black, it looks nice.

When I put lipstick on, I always then put my finger in my mouth and slowly pull it out with my lips around it... sounds disgusting, but it gets off the lipstick that otherwise might end up on my teeth!

  27. Hi !!! Thanks for stopping by and for your lovely comment.
I have the same problem with red lipstick !!! always a disaster

    I´m following you :)

  28. I would feel so conspicuous wearing red lipstick -- I wish I could, but I feel like I couldn't carry the look, especially since I am a lip gloss/nude lips kind of girl.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have felt the exact same way until recently...I'm still not 100% confident about it, but I keep trying so that I can step outside of that comfort zone.

    You should do it!

  30. Red lipstick--well, any bright color--is kind of my trademark. I guess when wearing it, you just accept that everyone will notice and strut it with confidence! :)

  31. !!

I feel your red lipstick blues.

I came to the conclusion that the key is in a VERY good job of lip liner, which I rarely have the time or patience to do :) So bright lipstick is a rarity for me.

But it is hard. Very hard. Especially if I see pictures from the 40s.

  32. You can do it! I love red lipstick. I actually misplaced my favorite one recently and feel bare. xo, rv

  33. I wear mine at LEAST once a week. Such a simple way to look completely dolled up! I recommend MAC's Ruby Woo. It's bold, yes. But it looks good on EVERYONE, lasts {almost} all day(due to eating), and doesn't run all over the place because it's in a matte finish!

  34. red lipstick is my secret weapon (or any bright shade for that matter.) a lovely pair of red lips makes me feel like i actually got ready for the day (even when i technically didn't). my favorite red red is mac's ruby woo, and orangey-red is nars heat wave.

and i am sure you look fabulous in red lipstick. just go for it!

    xx

  35. I am definitely not a red lipstick kind of girl...I absolutely love it on other women, but I know myself enough to know that if I can't even wear subtle colored lipstick, then I know I couldn't wear red. I think you just need to be confident in whatever you like and what makes you feel beautiful!

  36. Do a blue red, that is the more universally flattering. First apply nude lip liner, then red lipstick. Then after it's applied insert your index into your slightly parted lips and close lips and pull out your finger. All the lipstick that would potentially get on your teeth is now on your finger.

  37. I have the same issue with red lipstick! So far I like Stilla Lip Glaze in Cranberry, but I've heard that Nars Semi Matte Lipstick in Heatwave looks good on most everyone!

  41. Everytime I've tried the red, it looks too bright on me, almost like a hot pink. Maybe its my pale skin, but I think I look a little clownish wearing it. I just stick to a bright coral lipstick and call it a day...

  42. I LOVE LOVE LOVE RED LIPS!! I have been able to pull of red lips on a few occasions... one on my wedding day... but the only way I can do it is if i get a outlast lip color that dries on and then you put a gloss over top. I dream of having beautiful pale skin so that I can have the perfect pallet for RED Lips everyday... a girl can dream right? but for an everyday look I am clear gloss! Hope you find a way to paint your lips red! :D

  43. I love wearing red lipstick but a lot of the times, I just stick to an orange-y shade, (I prefer it better). I use Revlon's 'Kiss me Coral'. Have you ever tried using a lip stain. They tend to last a while and some of them have mouisterizers on the other ends to keep your lips from drying out.

  44. I love red lipstick! Black hair fair skin, and I wear it ALL THE TIME. Here is a good article to help you choose which color might be good for you http://www.makeupgeek.com/articles-reviews/my-top-5-red-lipsticks/

  45. Aww, i'm sorry to hear! I LOVE red lipstick.

Ultimately though, everyone has to wear what they're comfortable with. Do you wear other shades of lipstick? It could be just super shocking to you because you typically see a pale pink on your lips everyday when you look in the mirror. try practicing with pinks first :) ....

As for the color not coming off- this is a common issue with lipstick. Though if you shop around, some are better than others. But keep in mind they do make the stuff to stay on. Many women get annoyed when they have to keep reapplying every 10 mins. So you can fill a small vile with makeup remover and a little tissue in your makeup bag for non-shaved off removal lol Chapstick does wonders too. ;P
